Ludwig Heimbach lives as an architect in Cologne and Berlin. He studied at the TU Berlin and in the master class of Prof. Wolf D. Prix at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
The works of his office ludwig heimbach architektur understand architecture as an „instrument for acceleration and deceleration between city and bed“ and can be read as a modulation of the „outside“ to the „inside“ through all levels of scale. They deal with the theme of spatial communication from the urban exterior to the furniture, as well as the thresholds and filters in between.
His office’s current projects range from the RCGC start-up incubator in Cottbus, which will be completed in the fall of 2021, to small-scale projects that incorporate Japanese influences into his architectural language, for example in the „japanese whispers“ project series.
Color and its interplay in color tones and color-sound sequences are given a prominent role as a design tool for the user interfaces, which are thematized in their (re)effect on the moving user.
In this regard Ludwig Heimbach has developed several color collections for the building materials industry, including for the ETEX Group (Eternit).
His projects have been presented in many different contexts, including the German Pavilion at the 12th Venice Architecture Biennale, DAZ Berlin, HdA Graz, Hamburg Architecture Summer and Kyoto Art Center, as well as in numerous publications.
In cooperation with Astrid Bornheim, he plans exhibitions and trade fair appearances as HEIM B., which have won numerous awards.
In 2016 he was artist in residence of the Goethe Institute at Villa Kamogawa, Kyoto, where he explored the diversity of collaborative uses in Japanese housing and their potential for future housing models.
He was appointed to the German Werkbund dwb in 2008, to the Bund Deutscher Architekten BDA in 2009, and to the Architectural Design Association of Japan (ADAN) in 2017. In addition to his office practice, he teaches at various universities; to date, he has been a deputy professor at the msa I münster school of architecture and the University of Applied Sciences Mainz, as well as a lecturer at the PBSA Düsseldorf, UdK Berlin, Kyoto City University of the Arts, and ETH Zurich. Since 2018 he is a member of the board of trustees of the BDA Gallery Berlin.
